Wessex Fly Fishing Trout Lakes – Autumn Newsletter

The 2006 season has been a most encouraging one here at Tolpuddle. Despite the long hot, dry spell our fishermen seem to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The new low priced fishing for 55’s and over (–12 for 2 fish and –5 for a third with no time restrictions) has proved enormously popular. For the under 55’s, –15 (2 fish), –20 (3 fish) and –24 (4 fish) also with no time restrictions, represents very good value; no wonder we have been pleasantly busy. I am sure you will be pleased that PRICES WILL REMAIN UNALTERED FOR THE 2007 SEASON which will open on 1st April and CLOSE on 31st October.

The biggest management change this season has been a switch to a more local fish supplier. The new fish definitely spend more time higher in the water and seem to rise much more frequently. Feedback has certainly been extremely positive. Our old supplier was always incredibly reliable and helpful but in business tough decisions have to be taken at times.

Throughout the season we have been applying an expensive liquid – extract of barley straw, marketed as ‘Excalibur’, to combat algal growth. Results seemed dramatic in the early season but not so good as the season has worn on. I think we still need some actual barley bales gently rotting in each lake.

Despite the hot weather we did not close in July and August (as threatened) preferring to offer reduced price tickets when conditions dictated. This seems a reasonable policy! Please feel free to check this with us before visiting during the high summer months.

Finally, as many of you know, we will no longer be offering Barn Cottage as a self – catering holiday let. We are currently making alterations with a view to finding a permanent tenant. A big thank you to everyone who rented the cottage from us. Please bear our B&B in mind, partial self catering is possible. If you are looking for an alternative self catering cottage close by – we can warmly recommend :-
The Hayloft on the outskirts of Tolpuddle. Details can be found on the holiday cottage website here

Thank you very much indeed for your custom this season and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

With best wishes,
Richard and Sally Slocock.

n.b.Half price tickets available until 15th November to clear stocks out (thus moving the attractiveness of Tolpuddle to cormorants!) We will do the same in 2007.
